Moving And Storing Your Mattress: Five Essential Tips

If you need to put a mattress in storage temporarily, then you want to make sure it stays in great shape. It would be a catastrophe to pull it out of the storage unit, only to find that it's moldy, torn, dirty, or crushed. After all, replacing a mattress is not cheap -- and you've already spent the money to rent the storage unit at that point! To protect your mattress against damage, follow these moving and storing tips.

Leave It Clean

Any mold spores, dust mites, or even insects in your mattress will have plenty of time to replicate during storage. So, you want to start by cleaning your mattress to eliminate these pests. Sprinkle your mattress with baking soda. Then, let it sit for a couple of hours before vacuuming it up. The baking soda will absorb odors and moisture while also loosening up any dust and mold spores in the mattress.

Cover It Appropriately

You can usually purchase boxes made specifically for mattress storage at storage facilities and some big box stores. Look for one that is lined in plastic or vinyl, as this will provide a waterproof barrier to protect the mattress if anything were to drip or drop on it. Mattress boxes can, unfortunately, get a little pricey. If you cannot afford one, then a good alternative is to purchase a mattress bag. This is a plastic cover that you zip around your mattress.

Store the Mattress Flat

When you're able to access your storage unit, lay a few pallets on the ground. You can even set your bed frame up inside the storage unit instead if you prefer. Then, lay the mattress down on the pallets or bed frame. You do not want to store it on its side since this can cause it to develop a bend and start sagging.

Watch Those Boxes!

Putting a few clothes or some linens on top of the mattress is fine, but avoid stacking heavy items on top of the mattress while it's in storage. These could compress some of the springs and alter the shape of the mattress while it sits. If you have several mattresses of the same size, it's okay to stack one on top of the other while in storage. But do not put a smaller mattress on top of a regular one, as this will leave an impression.
